Two 2-Day Workshops at Westcote Bell
Pottery with Vaughan Smith
October 6&7 and 13&14,
Call: 845 687 7256
These classes run 9am-6pm on both days. The focus is on underglaze
decoration using the unique technique developed by our studio. The
forms are made using
hump and slump molds onto which slabs are draped. Tiles are produced as a by
product of the molded pieces. No previous skill is needed. The decoration is
created using cut paper as a stencil or mask over which the underglaze is painted.
Up to four layers are applied on each piece. The students can work from personal
imagery brought with them, or they can use the prepared designs such as landscapes,
floral compositions and animals. Day one revolves around making the forms and
developing an understanding of the decorative technique. Day two is usually filled
with students creating many varied pieces, often working into Sunday evening
with zeal.
Cost $175 per weekend
plus firing fees of between 50 cents to $5 per piece.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ART OF FRESCO
Fresco dates back through the centuries and its use was cross cultural.
Example exist in the tombs, temples and dwellings of the Chinese,
Hindu, Mayan, Egyptian, and Pompeii civilizations. Fresco was also
used during the Italian Renaissance by Michelangelo, Giotto and Fran
Angilico to name a few. Mexican painters, such as Diego Rivera, revived
this lost technique in the 20th Century.
TRUE FRESCO entails the grinding of pure earth pigments in distilled
water and applying them onto the last coat (intonaco) of a smooth
fine polish surface of wet lime plaster. The students are required
to experience
the whole fresco process: preparation of your sketch, mixing & building
several plaster coats, preparing your panels with wire mesh, grinding
pigments and transferring & painting on your panel.

Diane Boisvert received her B.F.A.in 1988.
She is a mixed-media artist.
Diane moved to New York to study Fresco painting technique at
the School of Sacred Arts in New York city. The introduction fresco
class opened her to another way to express her gratitude about that
ancient technique as a contemporary artist. Her interest, however,
were pulsed to mural painting when she went to California “Gualala” and
attended an intensive workshop of TRUE FRESCO with two very special
and inspiring human beings: the late Lucienne Bloch and the late Steven
Pope Dimitroff. They assisted Diego Rivera in the 30’s and have
continued to paint fresco murals ever since. Co-founder of Fresco
Movement in 1989 with artist Valerie de Montvallon. They completed
several mural commissions in New York also member of the National
