Review of "Openin' Flowa'"
Ulster County's own vocalist/percussionist Douglas Elliot cobbles
together live performances of his ever evolving free jazz concepts
to produce a pretty interesting disc.
Going for the free flow of spoken word/jazz improv can be a reckless
and indulgent adventure, but luckily Elliot and his guests, among
them bassist Don Pate, saxman Daniel Carter, and pianist Paul Duffy,
keep the flow of musical ideas bubbling like the Wallkill on a
breezy day.
Granted, Elliot's words can be a bit New Agey-y, but he's got a
very cool thing going musically and a smooth crooning style which
I'd really like to hear in a more "standards setting if the
whim ever strikes his creative fancy.
Elliot's other releases, Da Wave , and Let It Breathe are also
available. For more info, visit www.wetpaint.net.
