For seven years, the Marbletown
Arts Association has brought diverse forms of art before the public
by sponsoring exhibitions, performances and other arts-related events.
With your help, we value our art to society by offering scholarships
to young artists in the community and schools and support to
artists in the form of professional programs and networking.
Through the appropriate
educational, economic and cultural resources, the MAA aims to
enhance the quality of life and economic well-being of our
citizens, bridge
cultural differences and increase appreciation of the arts within
our community.
In 2005 the MAA was designated "Arts Organization of the Year" by
the Ulster County Arts Council.
Now our much celebrated Illumination: an Evening of Lantern-Making
and Music Under the Stars, was awarded a grant in sum of $900
by the Dutchess County Arts Council so that we will be able
to offer a second
seating for adults after the lantern making.
At our regular meetings, (which we have expanded from quarterly
to every other month: to be held on the 2nd tuesday of "even" months)
MAA has created the opportunity for artists in diverse disciplines
to make connections with one another and to find sponsorship for
new ideas. Everyone is welcome to join in bringing their thoughts
and
ideas to the table. The Autumn Art Harvest, our most ambitious
annual undertaking, involves the community at large in a widely
appealing
range of events and activities. It is the showcase for our member
artists.
This has included pottery, photography and papermaking workshops,
a cabaret performance, studio tours, group exhibitions
such as 2006's "Art
by the Foot," a literary brunch, a pumpkin carving event
for young and old alike, and the list goes on!
Proceeds from these events benefit the scholarship fund
which has awarded approximately $20,000 to 25 students
in the Roundout
Valley
with talent in the arts who plan to pursue this interest
through higher education. We plan to repeat the Scholarship
recipient
event with
the past and present winners at the BE Gallery in High
Falls.
This year on May 15th at 7:30pm, we are having a fundraiser
at the Rondout High School Auditorium during their Vocal/Jazz
Concert. We
will set up the display of donations for a silent auction
at Key bank on April 20th. Anyone wanting to donate
all or a portion
of their
work to the scholarship fund or volunteer their time
for the event should contact Vaughn Smith at 845-687-7256
or email
him at vsmithpots@aol.com.
Last year we began an event on the evening prior to
Halloween as termed "Mischief
Night". Prizes were awarded for the various best-carved pumpkins
by young and old. This year we plan to market this event sooner
and have it expanded for 2007. It was such a delightful surprise
to receive
such interesting and fun entries and have the pumpkins lit at
dusk.
We welcome two new board members this year: Nancy
Matheson, of Esopus Creek Studios and Bill Bannon,
a vocal performer
whom you may have
seen at last year's Cabaret.
Please fill-in & mail your dues renewal form along with your
check of $25 for a single membership or $40 if two of you are
joining together
or re-joining to the address listed below. We look forward to
hearing your ideas and serving you and the community at large
for years
to come, but we can't do it without you; so join again today!
